I’m all foaming-at-the-mouth excited about the chance to have a Democrat in the White House.
Of course I temper that enthusiasm with the reality that four years ago I was convinced that no one in their right mind (even right-winged-mind) would re-elect Bush.
But it happened…
…and I’m one to be ready for the future…
step aside Polyanna…I want to be ready for anything. Yes…I did it…I went to the Log Cabin Republican website.
Honestly, I started reading and got confused really fast. I kept saying, but why?…but why?…and that was really going nowhere. So I prank-called Rick Santorum, felt better about myself, and got back to trying to see what the Log Cabin Gays might say that would make me feel better about…oh God…another Republican president.
I got this far with the issues they outlined:
1) They never did officially give their support to Bush. (My question: who do you support when that’s the delegate choice from the convention). As a Republican then do you just not vote? or write in someone…hummm…maybe one of the gay Republicans in Congress?…wow, did you see that pig fly by? I just don’t know how they can be surprised that they can’t support “their party’s” nomination.
2) They didn’t support McCain as much as work to get Romney out. Now…nothing like picking a party where you have no one you want to vote for, but you can whittle down the list of “definitely not by any means”. Are you really behind your party’s ideals then? Sure…I’ve heard the small government, no taxes thing…do you honestly think that Democrats want more government?…The same government that’s using our taxes to pay for war instead of education. Come on…that small government, less taxes thing is a catch phrase that might have been relevant back when FDR was president, but both parties have changed since then. It’s an argument that’s used by Republicans as a scare tactic. “The Democrats are going to give everything away! Leave the governing to us!”
Bill for Iraq invasion (war) $275 million/day, $4,100/household
There are your scary statistics…
Hang on…let me step off my soap box…
McCain/Romney…ok…so the L.C. Republicans are happy that Romney is out, but they haven’t endorsed McCain yet. I checked…McCain has voiced his support of gay Americans, but he has a mixed record on gay rights.
(PLUS) McCain met with the L.C. Republicans during his last presidential bid, and he’s hired openly gay Senate and campaign staffers.
(PLUS) In 2004 and 2006 he voted and spoke out against amending Constitution to ban same-sex marriage
(MINUS) He opposes gay marriage and has said he’d support amending the Constitution if federal courts order gay marriage- I know…kind of negates that last plus doesn’t it…
(MINUS) Voted for Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell and still opposes lifting that ban on gays serving openly in the military. He supported denying spousal benefits to married gay couples and opposed outlawing anti-gay job discrimination.
I know I wouldn’t vote for him.
If L.C.Rs are waiting for McCain to welcome them with open arms then they’re fooling themselves…McCain has the religious right to appease…hellfire and damnation has a lot of political pull. I admire the idea of bringing up gay rights to Republicans, but in my mind don’t lend support to an organization that not only marginalizes you, but actively works against you.
Is it money? Are all you L.C.Rs in some sky-high tax bracket? Hey…I’ve got a nest egg going…I’m fiscally conscious…I happen to be gay also, what a great thing to vote for a party that will listen and accept my issues.
