The National Day of Silence is the day in which students take a vow of silence to bring attention to bullying and harassment that LGBT students, teachers and other staff face in schools across the US.
It is coordinated nationally by the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN).
An estimated 500,000 students from nearly 5,000 junior and high schools in all 50 U.S. states and Puerto Rico have participated in the National Day of Silence in past years and more than 6,000 schools registered this year.

Speaking on the House floor, today, openly gay Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin gave this statement to Congress:
“This year’s event will be held in memory of Lawrence King, a California 8th-grader who was shot and killed Feb. 12 by a classmate because of his sexual orientation and gender expression.
“Larry’s death is an unnecessary reminder of what we already know: lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender students continue to face pervasive harassment and victimization in schools.
“As students use their silence to demand schools are safe for all students, it is my hope that we in Congress will use our voices to ensure that it be so.”

Also introduced in the House of Representatives today was an Amendment supporting the goals and ideals behind the National Day of Silence. (Government Amendment)

It’s wonderful that there is this day of silence. Many people are protesting it under the impression there is some sort of gay agenda. I have never understood this what agenda we are supposed to have that is so terrible. My agenda includes:
Equality
Friendship
Pride
Tolerance
Community
Family
Freedom
Thanks for posting this.
hostess: you put it so well, those things are the very things in my agenda also…thanks for your comment.
I think this women needs to chill it big time.
she is still upset that her g/f almost didnt make it on a plane.
look lady, you need to remember the following…
On November 7, 2006, Wisconsin voters approved on a nearly 60%-40% vote, the following amendment to the Wisconsin Constitution:
“Only a marriage between one man and one woman shall be valid or recognized as a marriage in this state. A legal status identical or substantially similar to that of marriage for unmarried individuals shall not be valid or recognized in this state.”
you and your G/F are not legally married and as a non legal marriage your G/F should not have been on that plane..
you may like to break the laws, and bend them in your favor, but the law is the law. period
As for the Agenda? when kids are told they cant wear shirts to express their belief against homosexuality but they Gays and lesbians can wear pro G & L shirts it becomes an agenda.
we already have anti bully laws for schools. we dont need a DOS.
and if a DOS is so important to people, why are the same people so objective to a DOS to support how christians are treated in schools?? kinda hypacritical if you ask me..
hostess: I think your first comments should probably be directed to Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin.
Regarding the Gay Agenda…that’s a buzz word anti-gay people like yourself have come up with. I personally find it funny and use it. I often use humor and sarcasm as a pressure valve. It helps sometimes and has gotten me many a literal and figurative bloody nose.
Gays and lesbian student wear t shirts because they are gay. We try to come out because we want to be ourselves and not hide. When anti-gay people wear tshirts stating that homosexuality is wrong, using the bible as a source (the only reason anyone quotes when it boils down to it) and Hell and damnation is brought in as a punishment then after school violence ensues…the schools step in. See my above bloody nose…I didn’t wear a tshirt, but I got bloody noses…I grew up in Dallas…I sat it Southern Baptist pews…I went to public schools…
Joshua…I have my religion…it’s not the same as yours…I wish you love and good fortune. I hope you wish me and my same sex partner the same.
We should just abandon marriage as a legal institution and have civil unions for all people. Let people who want to marry do so in their churches, keep the separation of church and state. I am sick of these folks who think that same sex couples should have no legal rights.
I was executor of an estate, same sex friend but not my partner. Because everyone assumed we must be partners, they actually discriminated against me. When I said we weren’t partners, they looked at me funny but would then follow the will according to the law. That’s when my partner and I decided to do civil union, which our state allows. So maybe I do need to add that to my agenda: getting rid of state-recognized marriage, having civil union for all, and letting churches decide if they want to be the kind of places where love for all prevails or where love for just some prevails.
Excuse the rant.
hostess: rant all you want…sometimes I want to throw up my hands also. Situations such as the one you just described are a prime example. I like your idea of unions for everyone and then put the burden of open doors or closed doors to love for all for churches.
