LesbiaNation: Who says philanthropy is no laughing matter? Lesbian luminary Andrea Meyerson is producing her pal, comedian and newlywed, Suzanne Westenhoefer’s upcoming comedy show “Here Come the Brides” at Los Angeles’ famed Ford Theater, and giving the gay community one big wedding gift by donating the show’s proceeds to “Say No to Prop. 8.”
“I have had the pleasure of celebrating with friends at many gay weddings recently, including the beautiful wedding of Suzanne Westenhoefer and Jenn Houston,” filmmaker, event producer through her Stand Out Productions company and Women On A Roll founder Meyerson recently announced.
“After spending hundreds of dollars on wedding gifts, I decided the best wedding gift I could give my queer friends who have gotten married or plan to get married, is the simple right to be married! Therefore, I have decided to donate the proceeds of Suzanne’s upcoming show to ‘No On Prop 8.’”
Following the California Supreme Court’s landmark decision this May to overturn the state’s ban on same-sex marriage, anti-gay activists rallied to slap Prop. 8—an anti-gay marriage initiative—on the November ballot. The Human Rights Campaign immediately countered by developing “Say No to Prop. 8,” aimed at fundraising to defeat the initiative.
Meyerson is the director of the four-film Laughing Matters series through her company All Out Films and of comedy specials, including Suzanne Westenhoefer: A Bottom on Top and Kate Clinton: The 25th Anniversary Tour, which play repeatedly on Logo. As founder of Women On A Roll, Los Angeles’ largest women’s social group with 13,000-strong mailing list, it’s kismet that Meyerson combine her love of comedy with her dedication to expanding horizons for the LGBT community.
