Day 3: Freedom To Marry Week

We play this game in the office. It seems very stupid at first, but very quickly you begin to really think about your answers…
It always begins benignly:
OK…you’ve got one superpower: Either flying Or invisibility
Quickly you make your decision…then begin to rethink it–even on an easy one. You really begin to think about it.
Of course the decisions get hard: Either be blind Or deaf.
Either loose an arm Or loose a leg.
We are brutal in the office–and strangely serious…artists are like that. Batsh*t crazy as my friend Maxine used to say.
…
I know that each and every person that has struggled with their sexuality has played this Either/Or game, and each one of us remembers how brutal it can be.
Remembering how hard it was to tell that first person you were gay. Telling a parent or a sibling. Being denied or fired from a job. Violence.
I’ve relived each and every hard moment I went through and have played the game: Either wish I was straight with none of that anguish or wish I was gay, with all that discrimination.
My answer has alway been the latter…I feel that strongly–I take the choice that seriously.
With that kind of weight behind that answer, I play the new Either/Or game:
Either Civil Union Or marriage.
My answer will still always be the latter…with just as strong a conviction.
Either I can get married, Or I will continue to work towards that goal.
Love plays the vital role in my determination.
