WashingtonBlade:The Human Rights Campaign released its biennial scorecard assigning U.S. lawmakers ratings for their votes and sponsorship of gay-related legislation in the 110th Congress.

HRC notes that the 110th Congress marked the first time that the U.S. House voted on the Employment Non-Discrimination Act and the first time that both the U.S. House and U.S. Senate approved hate crimes legislation.

Here are some notable scores for lawmakers.

• Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.), the Democratic presidential nominee, scored 94 on the scorecard. He lost points for not supporting HRC’s position on the Uniting American Families Act. Obama supports the bill but has not signed on as a co-sponsor. HRC’s scoring criteria included points for co-sponsoring the measure.

• Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), the Republican presidential nominee, scored 0.

• Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.), a former contender for the Democratic presidential nomination, scored 95. She also did not support HRC’s position on the Uniting American Families Act. She also supports UAFA but has not signed on as a co-sponsor.

• Sen. Joe Biden (D-Del.), Obama’s running mate, also scored 95. Like Obama and Clinton, he supports UAFA but has not signed on as a co-sponsor.

Visit hrc.org for the full scorecard. The Blade will have full coverage of congressional races around the country in a special election preview issue Oct. 31.

236.com: Ashley Todd has taught a valuable lesson. Not to use an ATM in the wrong section of Pittsburgh so as to avoid large dyslexic black Obama supporters? No, but she did discover an easy way to get an interview with the still-press shy John McCain and Sarah Palin. According to reports, both John McCain and Sarah Palin spoke to Todd by phone after her alleged attack. Which means Ashley Todd has now had more time with Sarah Palin than most of the press corps.

True, McCain and Palin have given a few interviews to the networks, but the couple have yet to display their sizzling chemistry on Tom Brokaw’s “Meet the Press,” and there’s only two shows left before the election. So, if you’re reading this Tom and you want to land McCain and Palin, we’re just throwing this out there:

Barneyfrank

Towleroad: Following Bush’s address last night, congressman Barney Franks told reporters: “I’m glad the president said what he said. It’s not that making the speech was going to help, but failure to make a speech was probably hurting. In America, if you don’t hear from the president, it’s not a crisis.”

He then laid into the White House ‘photo-op’:

“All of a sudden, now that we’re on the verge of making a deal, John McCain drops himself in to make a deal. I really worry about this politicization of it. Frankly, we’re going to have to interrupt a negotiating session tomorrow between the Democrats and Republicans on a bill, where I think we’re getting pretty close, and troop down to the White House for their photo-op, and then come back and get on to it. We’re trying to rescue the economy, not the McCain campaign.

TheFrontiersman: WASILLA — Responding to news reports about then-Wasilla Mayor Sarah Palin asking a librarian how she would feel about banning books, a San Francisco man has donated two children’s books dealing with homosexuality to the Wasilla Library.

Mike Petrelis, a 49-year-old who files Freedom of Information requests for a living, said he was aghast to read reports of Palin’s 1996 inquiry about banning certain books at Wasilla’s library.

The news — old news in the Mat-Su Valley, but new in the Lower 48 — prompted Petrelis to send to Wasilla “Heather Has Two Mommies” and “Daddy’s Roommate,” both children’s books that explain gay lifestyle.”I said I’m going to send copies of both books just to make sure they’re on the shelves,’” Petrelis said.

The story of Palin’s book removal question caught national attention after reporters arrived in town to probe Palin following Republican presidential candidate Sen. John McCain’s surprise Aug. 29 announcement. In the ensuing barrage of media attention on Wasilla, the inquiry as to the librarian’s feelings on pulling some books became one of the many old Palin stories that suddenly became new again when it reached the Lower 48.

There is no evidence that Palin ever banned any books from the library, although many Outside media outlets have incorrectly reported to the contrary. One book with which Palin reportedly had a problem was  “Pastor, I am Gay,” by Howard Bess, a Valley resident and now-retired minister of the Church of the Covenant in Palmer.

Still, to Petrelis, Palin’s asking about removing books from the shelves was an attempt at censorship.

Whether “Heather Has Two Mommies” or “Daddy’s Roommate” will make it onto the shelves of the Wasilla Public Library is unclear.

Library Director KJ Martin-Albright said she has received the books but, like any donation, they have to go through a process that determines what to do with them.

There are two options for donations, she said. Either the library puts the book on the shelves or gives it to Friends of the Library to be sold. Martin-Albright said factors such as the author’s reputation, importance of the subject matter to the library’s collection, space availability in the library and a litany of other factors are used to determine the fate of donated materials.

As of Monday, there is no timeline for when a decision on the books Petrelis sent will be made, and Martin-Albright stressed every donated book goes through the same process.

“It’s the only way to be fair,” she said.

Petrelis’ idea to send the books seems to be well received in Alaska’s gay community. Bent Alaska, a blog chronicling gay news and events in the state, praises the donation on its Web site.

Tim Stallard, owner of Out in Alaska, a gay and lesbian guide service, said he thinks Petrelis’s effort is well-placed.

“I think it’s a good statement,” Stallard said. “I think in a free society like ours, openness and education and information are always important.”

Stallard added the timing is right after the Wasilla Public Library was thrust into the spotlight when Palin was named to the Republican ticket.

For Petrelis, his timing is even better because Banned Books Week, the American Library Association’s celebration of the freedom to read, begins Sept. 27. And more books dealing with homosexuality could be donated to Wasilla library soon. On his blog, Petrelis Files, Petrelis said he hopes to donate another gay-themed book, “And Tango Makes Three,” to the library.

Petrelis said while a book like “Heather Has Two Mommies” may not show a lot of circulation, that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s not being read.

EdgePhiladelphia: Several high profile blog sites reported on Monday that John McCain’s chief of staff Mark Buse is a closeted gay man. According to reports, 46-year-old Brian Davis has come forward claiming he is Buse’s ex-boyfriend. Several other unidentified individuals, including two members of the Log Cabin Republicans, have also made claims Buse is gay. Both McCain and vice-presidential running mate Sarah Palin oppose equal marriage rights for gays and lesbians and are known for their openly stated anti-gay sentiments.

Bloggers Mike Rogers and Michelangelo Signorile reported on Monday that they have significant information that leads them to suspect McCain chief of staff Mark Buse is a closeted gay man. Signorile claims that over the past month he has been contacted by three unnamed persons who said Buse is homosexual. The unidentified sources, two of which claimed to be members of the Log Cabin Republicans, told Signorile that Buse was ’open’ about his sexuality to his friends and family, but otherwise closeted.

More recently, Signorile says he was contacted by 46-year-old Brian Davis, an Arizona resident who claims he had a romantic relationship with Buse. Signorile says this claim has been confirmed by Davis’ mother and a longtime friend. Davis stated that he met Buse in 1986 in a gay bar and provided Signorile with a video (below) allegedly showing Davis inside of Buse’s apartment in Washington in 2000.

BlogActive.com writer Mike Rogers also reported claims that Buse is gay on Monday. Rogers states that he received confirmation from two unidentified sources of Buse’s sexual orientation and past relationships with men. He also wrote on BlogActive.com that his main source said that Buse had attended a number of “gay parties,” including one held at Buse’s home. Based on the information he received, Rogers decided to present Buse with a “Roy Cohn Award” for “working against the interests of the lesbian and gay community while living as a gay man”.

Rogers visited Buse’s office on Friday to present McCain’s chief of staff with the “Roy Cohn Award” but was turned away. A video of Rogers attempt to gift Buse with the award can be seen here.
